Ocean Gem takes out Queensland Beneteau Cup Line Honours Trophy
GCCM sponsored Ocean Gem from Southport Club competed in their 4th consecutive Queensland Beneteau Cup, hosted by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS) on the 28-29th October 2017.
The racing was held on Moreton Bay with 2 x 23nm 8-12 leg courses across the 2 days. The weather on both days saw the racing get underway in 5-6 knots, before building throughout both days to 15-19 knots creating challenging conditions for the competitors.
In both races Ocean Gem won the start and led each race from start to finish, taking out the Queensland Beneteau Cup Line Honours Trophy for the regatta for the second time in 3 years and finishing 2nd overall on handicap this year after tying for first place on handicap for the two previous years.
Skipper David Hows added; “This year was about building on our experience gained and lessons learned in the previous three regattas. Moreton Bay is a challenging place to sail and the tidal currents and islands create some complex tactical options. Our crew of ten sailed faultlessly across both days and our growing reputation at this event sees our handicap get a little tougher every time we attend. After more than 7 hours of racing across the two days, we finished just 67 seconds behind first place on corrected time – that’s yacht racing!”
Well done to the Ocean Gem crew and a big thank you to all of the GCCM onsite partners who contribute towards sponsorship for this vessel including Bradfords, Harbourforce, Stripes n FX and International Paints.
